Black Mirror: Fifteen Million Merits–5 Stars

Black_Mirror_1

Black Mirror is a 2011 science fiction TV series along the lines of The Twilight Zone.  Each episode is meant to be a self contained story of approximately one hour.  As such, I will review episodes individually as shorts rather than reviewing the show as if it were cohesive.  It was created by Charlie Brooker. “Fifteen Million Merits” is the second episode of season one.

Eisenhorn is an omnibus set in the Games Workshop Warhammer 40K universe written by Dan Abnett. Abnett has written comics for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Doctor Who magazine, audio dramas for the BBC set in the Doctor Who series, as well as many comics and novels set in the military science fiction setting of Warhammer 40K. Eisenhorn spans three novels and two short stories, weighing in at 768 pages, but the pacing and the prose make it seem much shorter.

Interview with the Artist Behind Little Dragon Cthulhu

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

In the early stages of creating Little Dragon Cthulhu, JimmyZ (of Little Bunny Cthulhu) and I realized that one of the first things I would need to get started was a mascot.  Little Bunny Cthulhu has been around for a while, and has been re-imagined many times by various artists.  I was going to have to hunt down the right artist to do our very first logo and hope they would be willing to take the commission in exchange for an interview.  After several days of searching up and down DeviantArt, I ran across a gallery of some very cute dragons in a variety of styles.  I sent the artist, FoxDragonLover, a note and what luck!  She was more than excited to get the request, and I had managed to find a young artist looking for her first break.

Sense8 (Pilot)–2 Stars

Sense8, a 2015 Netflix original series, has been named dropped to me about as often as Jessica Jones.  I finally got around to looking into it and the concept was certainly interesting: “Eight strangers around the globe find themselves connected — first by a violent vision, then by their shared ability to connect with one another’s thoughts and actions, and finally by the urgent need to find out what happened and why.”  It’s a show about telepaths who are specifically linked to one another despite having never met, and whose abilities are triggered by a traumatic event none of them were aware of.  Interesting urban fantasy concept, right?

The Color Master–4 Stars

The Color Master is a collection of short stories by Aimee Bender, published in and named a NY Times Notable Book for 2013.  She has written several other award-winning books, particularly the lauded The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake.  Bender writes what some call “weird fiction” or “surrealism,” but I am going to place her solidly in the “speculative fiction” genre because many of her stories take essential elements of fantasy and weld them onto other genres.  In this collection, her stories range from two and a half pages to thirty pages, so they are all fairly short, nothing bordering on the novella length.

Thale–4 Stars

Thale is a relatively short (about 80 minutes) 2013 Norwegian film written and directed by Aleksander L. Nordaas, director of the award-winning film In Chambers.  It has consistently made its way to top horror movie lists over the last few years, so you might be mildly confused by its appearance here on Little Dragon Cthulhu. Despite being billed as a horror movie, I consider it solidly speculative, more science fiction than horror.  This might also explain the mixed reviews you may see on websites like Rotten Tomatoes.  I will say outright: Thale does not watch like most horror movies you are accustomed to.  It’s like Splice, but with fewer deaths and significantly less violence.
